Job Description

The Framework Agreement on First Nation Land Management is a significant expression of Indigenous ingenuity and modern efforts to shed the colonial legacy of the Indian Act. Our team at the First Nation Lands Management Resource Centre (FNLMRC) is cutting edge, dedicated and experienced in assisting First Nations with developing workable solutions to the everyday challenges of community led lands and resources governance. We are currently searching for motivated and qualified candidates to fill a Communications Officer position.

ABOUT US

 

As part of the Framework Agreement on First Nation Land Management (Framework Agreement), the Lands Advisory Board (LAB) and the First Nations Land Management Resource Centre (RC) provide political and technical support to developmental and operational First Nations.  The developmental process under the Framework Agreement consists of a series of activities including the drafting of community land codes, implementing communication strategies and community voting procedures, as well as finalizing Individual Agreements with Canada. Once a First Nation ratifies its Land Code and becomes operational, the LAB and RC provide various support services such as assisting/advising with drafting land laws, rules, procedures, and instruments, as well as implementing land governance systems and facilitating agreements and other arrangements with municipal, provincial, federal or First Nation governments.

 

ABOUT THE POSITION

 

Reporting to the Senior Communications Advisor, the Communications Officer will be responsible for assisting with the creation, implementation, and maintenance of various communications products for internal and external audiences which may include RC staff and LAB Directors, First Nations, and other parties.

 

The following is an overview of the key responsibilities for this position but may not be all-inclusive.

 

Assisting the Senior Communications Advisor to fulfill the RC’s responsibilities under the Framework Agreement [FA] including, but not limited to:

 

  • In alignment with the RC’s communication strategy and branding, support the Senior Communications Advisor with the creation, implementation, and maintenance of new and existing communications products for internal and external use. Such products may include, but are not limited to:
    • Communications tools such as pamphlets, infographs and handouts for RC staff to use while speaking to the Framework Agreement and RC support services at external events such as First Nations meetings, conferences, trade shows, etc.
    • Newsletters, bulletins, brochures and reports
    • Presentations
    • Social Media content
    • Video products
  • Under the guidance of the Senior Communications Advisor, assist Signatory First Nations as needed, with the creation ofproducts to communicate topics related to land code development and implementation. These products may include brochures, fact sheets, backgrounders, newsletters, key messages, presentations, and website content.
  • Assist with the creation and maintenance of websites for special projects or events, as needed.
  • Assist with the creation of graphics, signage and print material for RC events.
  • Any other related workload in keeping with the LAB, RC and First Nations’ responsibilities in implementing the FA.

 

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

 

To be considered for the position identified above, or for future consideration, please demonstrate how you meet the following essential criteria:

 

  • Post-secondary education in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, or other related field, or a combination of education and experience.
  • 2+ years experience in communications, marketing, or another relevant role.
  • Experience in editing, proofreading and professional writing.
  • Experience working with First Nations communities is preferred.

The following essential requirements will be assessed at a later date, either through an interview, written assessment and reference checks:

 

  • Proficiency with the Adobe suite of design programs, including Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Premiere, and Photoshop.
  • Advanced knowledge of formatting for Word and PowerPoint.
  • Proficiency with software programs such as, Microsoft Office and SharePoint.
  • Proficiency with online meeting platforms.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to refine complex ideas into plain language.
  • Excellent time management and project management skills.
  • Web design skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both in a group setting as well as independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Due to the amount of work with First Nation communities, preference may be given to candidates with Indigenous ancestry.
