Abuse Counselling –

Counsellor

Wage: $36.00 per hour

 Part time - Full time 21- 35 hours per week

Permanent position – dependent on funding

JOB SUMMARY

This position provides counselling support both short term and trauma counselling.  The position includes intake, assessment, individual service plans, individual and group counselling, brief and ongoing sessions, and provides clients with information about other relevant services.  The Counsellor assists clients in developing healthy coping skills, addressing trauma and working toward identified goals. 

Responsibilities

  • Provides either brief or ongoing counselling services.
  • Provides one-on-one counselling, group facilitation, in person or virtually, that may include psychoeducation, crisis support, and trauma counselling as is appropriate for the client(s). 
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates support groups ensuring groups are appropriate and meet clinical standards and client needs. 
  • Conducts phone screening and intake appointments both virtually and in person.  
  • Gathers information about the client, conducts assessments, identifies areas of concern. develops interpretive summaries and consults with client to create individualized service plans. 

Requirements and qualifications

Education and Certification:

  • Master’s degree in counselling psychology or related field. 
  • Registered with professional regulatory body such as the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors or Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.
  • Training in trauma and group counselling. 
  • Satisfactory Criminal Records Check. 
  • Registered as a CVAP approved counsellor is an asset. 

Experience:

  • 2 years’ experience providing counselling preferred 
  • Or a combination of relevant sector experience and successful completion of hours for registration with the CCPA or BCACC

Knowledge and Skill Set

  • Excellent verbal, written, and active listening skills able to communicate effectively and respectfully with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. 
  • Excellent group facilitation skills. 
  • Working knowledge of group process. 
  • Strong crisis de-escalation and conflict resolution skills. 
  • Knowledge of oppression and the feminist lens of violence against women. 
  • Strong attention to detail. 
  • Strong relationship buildings skills able to build rapport, establish trust, and set appropriate boundaries. 
  • Strong documentation skills, able to produce accurate and factual case notes in a timely manner.  
  • Excellent planning, organizational, and time management skills able to prioritize competing priorities. 
  • Able to work effectively independently and as a member of a team. 
  • Up to date knowledge of relevant community resources. 
  • Strong computer skills, able to use Microsoft Office365, and virtual meeting platforms including Microsoft Teams and Zoom. 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This position includes flexible availability with some work in evenings to accommodate client schedules. 
  • This position interacts with people in difficult situations. 
  • This position requires in person service.  Social distancing must be followed, and appropriate PPE will be provided.
